"ABINGER, a parish in the first division of the hundred of Wotton, in the county of Surrey, 4 miles S.W. of Dorking, and 3 from Gumshall railway station. It is situated at the foot of Leith Hill, on a branch of the river Wey.The living is a rectory,* value £453, in the diocese of Winchester, and in the patronage of W. J. Evelyn, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. James, is in the early English style of architecture. The manor belongs to the Scarlett family of Abinger Hall, who take the title of baron from this parish. It is a place of meeting for the Surrey Union hounds."
