BETCHWORTH

"BETCHWORTH, (or Beechworth), a parish in the first division of the hundred of Reigate, in the county of Surrey, 3 miles to the E. of Dorking, and the same distance from Reigate, its post town. It is pleasantly situated at the foot of Box Hill; and is a station on the South-Eastern railway. The village of Brockham is included in this paris.

The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester, of the value of £126, in the patronage of the Dean and Canons of Windsor. The church contains a monumental brass of the year 1553, and is dedicated to St. Michael. There is a free school with an endowment of £20 a year, and some other charities which produce about £55 per annum. Betchworth Castle was for several centuries the seat of the Earls of Warren and Surrey. It is situated about a mile from the village, in a fine park abounding in magnificent oaks, chesnut trees, and elms.

"BROCKHAM, a village and parochial chapelry in the parish of Betchworth, hundred of Reigate, in the county of Surrey, 2 miles to the E. of Dorking, and 2 S.W. of Betchworth railway station. It is a beautiful and improving village, in the vicinity of Box Hill and Betchworth Castle.

The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Winchester, value 280, in the patronage of Colonel Goulburn. Christ Church is a neat structure in the Norman style, with a spire. There is a chapel belonging to the Baptists."
