An 1868 Gazetteer description of the following places in


BURSTOW

"BURSTOW, a parish in the second division of the hundred of Reigate, in the county of Surrey, 8 miles to the S.E. of Reigate. Crawley is its post town. It lies near the border of Sussex, and the London and Brighton railway.

The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Canterbury, value £511, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church is dedicated to St. Bartholomew. John Flamstead, the astronomer, once held the rectory of this parish The charities are of small value.

Near the village is Burstow Lodge, or Smalfield Place, built in the reign of James I., and afterwards the seat of the Bysshe family, one of whom, Sir Edward Bysshe, was Garter King-of-Arms to Cromwell. This old seat is now a farmhouse."
