"CHARLWOOD, a parish in the first division of the hundred of Reigate, in the county of Surrey, 3 miles S.W. of the Horley station of the London, Brighton, and South Coast line. It is situated near Timberham Bridge, on the river Mole, where the Danes were defeated.The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Winchester, value £550, in the patronage of H. C. Wise, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is an ancient structure, partly in the Norman style. The charities amount to £28 per annum. Here are schools for both sexes, with a small endowment."
