"CHIPSTEAD, a parish in the second division of the hundred of Reigate, in the county of Surrey, 2 miles from the Merstham station of the London and Brighton line. Redhill is its post town.The living is a rect,* in the diocese of Winchester, value £431, in the patronage of Colonel H. Jolliffe. The church, dedicated to St. Margaret, is supposed to be more than 800 years old. The charities amount to £16. Here the Wesleyans have a chapel. There is an endowed school with an income of about £70 a year, left by Mrs. Mary Stephen, for the apprenticing and instruction of poor children. Sir William Jolliffe is lord of the manor."
