Cranley

"CRANLEY, a parish in the second division of the hundred of Blackheath, in the county of Surrey, 7 miles S.E. of Godalming, and the same distance from Guildford, its post town. It is situated near the Arun and Wey canal, and chiefly belongs to Earl Onslow, who takes from it the title of viscount. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Winchester, value £1,195, in the patronage of the Rev. J. H. Sapte. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is an old structure in the Gothic style, with a richly ornamented chapel. It contains a fine stained-glass window, handsome carved screens, and an old brass. There is a National school. At Vacherie is a moat surrounding the foundations of the ancient baronial seat of the earls of Surrey. A fair is held on Whitsun-Tuesday.
