"HASCOMBE, a parish in the first division of the hundred of Blackheath, county Surrey, 4 miles S. of Godalming, and 7 from Guildford. The village, which is small, is situated on the road from Godalming to Horsham. The Wey and Arun Junction canal passes by the eastern boundary of the parish. The tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £256 10s.The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Winchester, value £170. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is an ancient structure. Dr. Conyers Middleton, author of the life of Cicero, was once rector of this parish. On Castle Hill are traces of a camp, supposed to be Roman."
