Brede, Sussex

BREDE is a parish, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Gostrow, rape of Hastings, union and county court district of Rye, diocese of Chichester, archdeaconry of Lewes, and rural deanery of Dallington, 6 miles east-north-east from Battle. The church of St. George consists of a nave, side aisles, and three chancels; one of these chancels belongs to the ancient mansion of Brede Place, and was the burying place of the Oxenbridge family; the architecture of this chancel is much more elegant than that of the rest of the church: the interior contains some ancient tombs and brasses. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, annual value £900, with residence, in the gift of T. Frewen, Esq., and held by the Rev. Augustus Aylward, M.A. of Oxford. Here is a neat Wesleyan chapel. A fair is held here on Easter Tuesday for cattle and pedlery. The population in 1861 was 1,083. Area of the parish, 4,840 acres.
