Donnington, Sussex

DONNINGTON is a small village and parish, 2 miles south from Chichester, in the Western division of the county, Box and Stockbridge hundred, Chichester county court district, rape, diocese and archdeaconry, deanery of Boxgrove, and West Hampnett union, The church (supposed Trinity) is an ancient structure in the Norman style, with square tower and 3 bells, nave, chancel, and some stained glass windows. The living is a vicarage, value £367 per annum, with residence in the gift of the Bishop of Oxford, and held by the Rev. Henry Malthus, M.A, of Trinity College, Cambridge; the Rev. Edmund Stansfield, B.A., of Downing College, Cambridge, is curate. Here is a small parish school, supported by subscription. The Arundel and Portsmouth Canal passes close to the village. The area is 1,029 acres, and the population in 1861 was 188.
