Ifield, Sussex

IFIELD is a parish, 7 miles north-east from Horsham, 32 from London, 3 north-west from Three Bridges station, and a mile and a half north-west from Crawley station, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Burbeach, though locally in that of Singlecross, Horsham union and county court district, rape of Bramber, diocese of Chichester, and archdeaconry and. rural deanery of Lewes. The church of St. Margaret, in the Early Decorated style, consists of nave, chancel, and two side aisles, and contains recumbent statues of a Knight Templar and his lady. The register dates from the year 1568. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £217, with residence, in the gift of, and held by, the Rev. Richard Nathaniel Blaker, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge. The river Mole runs through this parish. Here is a meeting house for the Society of Friends. Lord Rodney and Major M. Pipon are lords of the manor, and with Admiral Buckle, and Thomas and Henry Lewin, Esqrs., are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly strong clay and marl. The area is 4,116 acres, and the population in 1861 was 1,307.
