“Colour is in everything, but it is also independent of everything. It promises or threatens independence.”- David Batchelor
Level 1 Gallery proudly presents Jesc Bunyard's Photograms.
Jesc Bunyard's work explores the intersection between art, music and science. With colour as her primary concern, Jesc avoids subject matter in the traditional photographic sense and instead focuses on the immanent and ephemeral. Her photographs cannot be recreated and each one represents an instant – a situation – created by circumstances set by her. Light is utilized and projected through a growing series of 'instruments' such as mirrors, magnifying glasses and filters, and then captured by the camera. No digital manipulation takes place.
The series of works presented by L1 Gallery are 'visual scores', aiming to absorb the viewer into rhythms of colour and light. And even though it would be hypocritical to say that Jesc's works resist interpretation, it certainly gives an immediate sensory experience, a visual experience that could, and is intended to, counterpart the sensory pleasure of music; Jesc frequently works with The Sculptural Orchestra and their music will accompany her work on the opening night of the exhibition. L1 Gallery invites you for an experience that is neither meant to transcend nor to enlighten you, but merely to inject some colour into our space. In the words of Susan Sontag: “What is important now is to recover our senses."
