Kathrin Böhm and
Andreas Lang (Public Works)
Mobile Bench,
to arrive soon…
For
their interest in social processes as they are informed by the interchange
of art, architecture and design, and their propositions of alternative
models and spaces for displaying creative production, I.D.E.A.London has
asked Public Works to collaborate with us. Kathrin Böhm and Andreas Lang
have kindly agreed to lend their Mobile Bench to I.D.E.A.London, to use as
a flexible, mobile base for discussion, exchange and storage of
disseminating material, moving in, out and between institutional
boundaries. Due to technical and ‘other’ circumstances, the Mobile Bench
is still pending. Details for its arrival will follow soon…
The Mobile Bench was designed as part of a six month consultation project
commissioned by Camden Council in 2002 for an area called Lismore Circus.
The project investigated the current under-use of the site and looked into
ideas for future changes. The consultation lead to a design and public
programme proposal which will be implemented later in 2005.
Public Works
is an art/architecture collective consisting of Architects Sandra
Denicke-Polcher, Torange Khonsari, Andreas Lang and Artists Kathrin Böhm
and Stefan Saffer, who have been collaborating in different constellations
since 1998.
The
team is specialised in participation and design projects for public spaces
and institutions.
Clients in the UK include Camden Council, Siemens Corporate
Communications, Peabody Trust, Serpentine Gallery, Sleaford City Council,
Gasworks Gallery and Thurrock Council.
Public Works’ conceptual interest lies in the relationship between
institutions who offer and govern public space, and the users of those
spaces. Social structures are one of the main factors which enable our
physical structures to work or collapse, thus we give equal importance to
building community structures as well as building quality physical
structures. Our contribution as artists/architects is to propose and
implement communication structures and physical structures that support
and make use of the existing local networks and resources, and at the same
time offer, propose and stimulate new activities and ways of exchange.
