John A Stotesbury
John A Stotesbury. Senior Lecturer in English, University of Joensuu, Finland, since 1975. His first interest is a mix of the popular novel, autobiography, colonial and postcolonial cultures, and South African urban fiction, both anglophone and Afrikaans in translation. London as imperial and post-imperial literary space has become a part of that. Publications include Apartheid, Liberalism and Romance: A Critical Investigation of the Writing of Joy Packer (Uppsala, 1996), African Voices: Interviews with Thirteen African Writers (co-compiler; Sydney, 1989), Postcolonialism and Cultural Resistance (co-editor; Joensuu, 1999), and London in Literature: Visionary Mappings of the Metropolis (co-editor; Heidelberg, 2002). Currently working towards a study of anglophone urban fiction by African Muslim women writers including Ahdaf Soueif, Rayda Jacobs and Leila Aboulela. His personal stake in the representation of historical London includes an intriguingly brief reference in the OED (under “Shoemaker”) to a namesake who as a Londoner was eventually executed for his involvement in the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.
