Current Project

The Great War witnessed the fragmentation of the main organisations of the British women’s movement primarily as a result of deep disagreements over the question of what women’s attitude should be both to this war in particular and to warfare/violence in general. What, I ask in this thesis, were the ideological stakes of that ‘women-and-war’ debate?

Post-graduate Seminars Created

  • History of Feminism Network (since 2006): I am the founder and main organiser of the History of Feminism Network. This is a website (to view it, go to http://community.gold.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=39 and click on ‘Login as guest’) designed primarily to allow postgraduate historians of feminism to meet fellow researchers in their field; exchange information on useful archival or other research resources, conference calls for papers, job opportunities and so on; and debate issues in or for their discipline. It was launched in September 2006 and currently has close to 50 members, located all over the world. The site also serves as the principal co-ordinating tool for the network’s ‘London Group’ which brings together a dozen post-graduate students once a month at the Women’s Library where we discuss the work (often a chapter) that one of our members has posted on the site for our consideration or papers published by scholars working in the history of feminism.

  • Politics Postgraduate Research Seminar (since 2005): I am the founder and main organiser of the postgraduate research seminar of the Politics Department at Goldsmiths. The MPhil/PhD students of the department meet every two weeks to discuss each other's work. The paper to be discussed any given week is posted on the seminar's website the preceding week, giving each of the attendees time to read it and prepare questions.
