Nigel    Helen    Ryan    Work    Loopy    Haircuts    New!

April 28, 2006

Oh how time flies! Four months since my last update, 2 years since I started this page, and only 10 days until the arrival of the second son!

I've had enough faffing about with html and text editors, and so I've decided to move with the times and use a blog instead.

From now on you will find my photos, inane ramblings and strange links here.

I will however leave this site, as a monument of bad web design, and final resting place for bad hair photos.

See you on the other side?

December 20, 2005

Here's a festive photo of the Smith Family, which Hamish kindly took for us during a brief visit last Sunday.

On a festive note Helen and I enjoyed attending Ryan's school nativity play, which involved his entire [reception] class dancing the Macarena. And very well they did, too.

I have officially thrown in the towel in the Silly Haircut Olympics after being completely outclassed by this man.

Oh, and in case you didn't know, we are expecting a new addition to the Smith family, arriving sometime next May.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all!

...Here are the photos from Ryan's birthday party at last. Mathew's mum Katy won 'pin the tail on the donkey', but I think she might have cheated!

Ryan had his first trip to the cinema at half-term - to see Wallace & Gromit: The curse of the were-rabbit. I think Helen and i enjoyed the film more, but he was very impressed by the popcorn.

At the moment, he is mostly listening to Soupy George [might take a while to load]. Meanwhile I am trying to decide whether or not to buy a shredder.

October 11, 2005

I finally got round to posting the rest of the Paris photos. The last picture shows Oscar Wilde's tomb, in Pere Lachais cemetary.

More photos, of Ryan's 5th birthday party, coming soon...

Meanwhile, have you seen the rubbish on BBC News Online lately? They want to increase the licence fee to pay for that?

August 30, 2005

I've created a moblog. Well actually it's more of a photoblog, since I don't have a snazzy phone, but anyway...

The first photo is taken from a recent visit to Paris for my mum's 70th birthday - where we had a lovely time. More photos from this trip to come.

Apologies for the extended absence! I'm afraid the truth is that I am a lazy sod.

I have just uploaded all the photos from this year's Glastonbury Festival. If you have a small monitor then I'm afraid things will look a bit cramped.

November25, 2003

I have uploaded Ryan's Birthday photos at last, which brings the number of pages on this site to 100! What's that you say? Size isn't everything?

Anyway if you're looking for somewhere new to drink in London, check out Blue Jam's Bar Guide - it's full of suggestions. Definitely not child-friendly though!

November 7, 2003

At last I have sorted out the photos from Vic and Jem's wedding - a terrific do at Portmeirion, where cult tv series The Prisoner was filmed. It was amazing to be actually staying in "the village", but the high point of the weekend had to be the happy couple's 'first dance'!

This almost brings me up to date... except for the pictures of Ryan's birthday treat trip to see Thomas the tank engine - coming soon!

October 24, 2003

Well the favicons still don't work...anyway apologies for lack of updates, but I have been busy moving house. I STILL haven't sorted out my photos, but I have put up my super 8 film from Olivier & Tara's wedding ceremony, a fabulous affair which took place in Brittany on September 6. WARNING - It will be unbearably slow to load, unless you have broadband, or are wasting time at work! And if you've still got time on your hands, check out this excellent rant about rip off record companies.

Pointless waste of time no.134 - creating a favicon for my homepage. Favicons are icons for favourites saved in your internet browser - mine should be showing in the address bar of your browser now, and appears on your favourites list when you add my homepage. Thanks to Mike Slocombe's Urban75 for bringing them to my attention.

Damn! It's not showing up on my trusty Imac! Maybe it only works for PCs? If I can't see it at home i'll have to remove all this...sigh.

I have been weighing up the pros and cons of further study for some time now, and I think I've finally found the place for me to do it - UBS - The University of bums on Seats. Of course it's nothing like Goldsmiths......

Coming soon ...... photos from our wedding excursions to Brittany and Port Meirion.

August 20, 2003

Apologies for lack of updates - I've been busy authoring DVDs! I've added another Ryan photo at last, from my brother-in-law's wedding, back in April.

Now that everybody keeps making fun of my big belly, I'm planning to take up some kind of adreneline sport - excercise with a bit of excitement to it. The trouble is, I'm torn between house gymnastics and extreme ironing. What do you think?

July 28, 2003

Oops! I exceeded my web space allocation trying to put up my avatar animation! Luckily those nice people at Goldsmiths Web Team have decided to allow me some more space, so I can include even more stuff. Yeah!

July 25, 2003

I have finally animated my avatar on the home page, as you will have noticed, hopefully. When I visited the BT zone of the Millennium Dome in May 2000, I had my avatar created in a "3D photo booth", provided by Avatarme. Having downloaded the file from the web days later, I 'grabbed' a still to use for my homepage, hoping that eventually I would learn how to animate it. Et voila! Only 3 years later!

Please Email me if it doesn't work, takes ages to load, or otherwise messes up my homepage for you.

July 15, 2003

At last! All Glastonbury 2003 photos are now online! I'm learning to hate web design the old-fashioned way - HTML and a simple text editor. One missed fullstop, one space where there shouldn't be, and it's kaput. And no friendly diagnostic error messages! I think it's time I learned to use a WYSIWYG editor.

July 14, 2003

Despite the fabulous weather, I've made time to start putting my Glastonbury 2003 photos online. Plenty more coming soon....

July 4, 2003

Well as you can probably guess, a fantastic time was had by all at the mother of all festivals. Having arrived home on Monday night, sunburned and slightly the worse for wear, normal life has resumed in a rather dreary way. If you have the post-holiday blues like me, visit rathergood.com to cheer yourself up.

June 12, 2003

I'm slacking again! Felt guilty I still haven't sorted out new Ryan photos, so I put this one up in the meantime. More coming soon..... Also found a useful site for Photoshop users, with some good tutorials.

I almost forgot - my pc @ home [running XP] is having problems with all the quicktime movies on this site, yet my imac plays them all ok. Can you email me to let me know if you are using XP and the movies play? By the way, they are probably very slow to download unless you have broadband.

May 31, 2003

Added another new video clip Aqua Baby to the Loopy Video page. Found a great map of the Glastonbury site online. I will probably be set up just to the right of the Cabaret tent, near the Big Wheel [ which isn't marked on the map].

May 30, 2003

Glastonbury line-up announced at last! Looking forward to seeing perennial favourites Lamb, as well as Ozomatli, Buena Vista Social Club, Polyphonic Spree, De La Soul, and of course Camberwell's finest - ska band Top Cats. Can't wait!

Published this page - I wanted to make it a weblog, but I can't find any decent [and free] blogging software for macs. Also added new video clip Feeding Time to the Loopy Video page.

May 28, 2003

Noticed that the hits counter on my index page had reset to zero [horror!], so I emailed the web team support @ Goldsmiths. A helpful guy called Dan replied, restored my page count, and asked wherabouts I do my loopy thing at Glastonbury. It turns out that he has camped nearby in the Orchard, and thought the sight of "spaced out festival goers staring at screens showing loops of Dr Who in the middle of the night" was classic Glastonbury! Perhaps we'll meet up this year.

All of this made me feel so guilty about not updating this site, that I put up a temporary apology and got started on this section.

April 28, 2003

Received an email from a namesake down under:

"Not a big net-head, but bored tonight and browsing. Typed in my name on a Google search (Nigel Smith), and found out there are a lot of us. Your site/stuff seemed the most interesting, so thought I would just drop you a quick line to say Hi from a fellow Nigel in Melbourne, Australia. Very impressed with the hair shots, but can't load past the pineapple. My computer skills are limited, so no comparisons of hair faux pas' available. Sorry. Just feel a generally warm and satisfied feeling that you reached out to another Nigel on the other side of the planet. From one Nigel Smith to another (do you have a middle name - I haven't)."

Funnily enough, I actually have some long lost relatives in the Melbourne area. Anyway I had to google myself, and was pleased to see that I am now up to 7th. Last time I looked I wasn't there at all!
