Formal Assesesment- Details
Formal assessment means assessment whether expressed numerically or in any other form which contributes to the award or classification of any degree, certificate, diploma or any other academic or profession qualification and applies to all levels. The boycott extends to assessment that contributes to a decision about a student's suitability to continue with their studies.
Assessment that is part of teaching is NOT included in the boycott. Feedback can be
given to students if it is part of the teaching process, placement practise can be supervised but there should be no formal assessment of students in relation to it.
The boycott includes any form of in-course continuous assessment including the assessment of projects and performance.
All administration associated with student assessment is included in the boycott unless your job is almost entirely devoted to the administration of examinations.
Marks cannot be withheld. Members with a backlog of essays handed in before the action began are advised not to process marks or assessments in any way including those which originate before the beginning of the assessment boycott.
Quality assurance processes that may involve reviews of assessment practices and methodologies but do not involve the actual assessment of sutdents are NOT included in the action.
Pre-entry courses are not covered by the action.
