TUC Appeal for Gaza

Dear all,

The BBC are now quoting Palestinian medical sources who say that 910
people have been killed so far in Israel's invasion of Gaza, of whom 292
are children and 75 women.
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7825480.stm). Some one
million residents of Gaza are without power while there are serious – and
increasing – shortages of food and medical supplies.

I encourage you to support the TUC's Aid Appeal - Give for Gaza, and to
donate money that will provide humanitarian relief to the people of Gaza.
You can either write a cheque payable to 'TUC Aid - Give for Gaza' and
send it to me and I will collect donations together and send them on to
the TUC; or, better still, do a collection in your Department and then
forward it on.

Full details of the TUC appeal are at:
http://www.tuc.org.uk/international/tuc-15812-f0.cfm

The Executive will discuss further means of providing support and
solidarity but meanwhile I do hope you think of supporting the appeal.

Finally, can I point you to:

Sally Hunt's speech at the Gaza protest at:

best wishes

Update on INTO

Plans for an in-house joint venture with INTO have been scrapped!

Papers to this week's academic board state that: 'It is clear to both SMT
and INTO that a joint venture between INTO and Goldsmiths to provide an on-campus foundation programme, similar to that which operates at other universities, is not currently an option worth pursuing. We continue to explore other possibilities which might arise from a partnership with
INTO.'

We will be seeking urgent clarification on 1) why the joint venture was
called off and 2) precisely what form(s) the 'other possibilities' of a partnership with INTO are likely to involve.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the campaign so far but, as you can see, the prospect of the outsourcing of the recruitment and teaching of international students has not entirely disappeared.
