Lobby Parliament against
HE cuts on 26 January

Background
Just before Christmas, Peter Mandelson announced thatHEFCE’s budget will be cut by £915m over the next three years, which prompted an article in the Guardian entitled 'Universities tell Brown: cuts will bring us to our knees'. These cuts place the future of higher education in doubt, and could considerably worsen the university experience for both staff and students in the future. For more information, download this leaflet. Look here for info on 26 Jan on the national UCU website.

How do we respond?
We need to send a loud, clear message to government that there will be
serious consequences for their refusal to invest in in education. We also
need to put forth our ideas about what kind of education we want.
Marketisation should not be the price to pay for accessible education, and skyrocketing fees should not be the price to pay for decent working
conditions for staff.

What can we do?
1.JOIN US AT PARLIAMENT ON THE 26TH OF JANUARY BETWEEN 2:30 AND 4:30PM.

2. LOBBY YOUR MP. You can email your MP asking to meet them by visiting http://www.writetothem.com. You can also write your MP at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA or call your MP’s House of Commons offce via the switchboard on 020 7219 3000. Look here for advice on lobbying your MP.

3. USE THE PRESS. Write op-ed pieces, letters, blog posts, etc. As the
situation for education funding is in part a battle of ideas, we need to
provoke public debate about the future of education.

4. SIGN THE PETITION here. It will be delivered to MP Joan Ruddock on that day.
