London Weighting Statement from AUT

The AUT believes that London Weighting should form part of national pay-bargaining and part of the harmonisation of pay scales.

We strongly believe that it should be brought up to a level that properly compensates for the substantial housing and travel costs in the capital. This would go some way to addressing the capital's exacerbated recruitment and retention difficulties.

We note with concern that it is now eleven years since London Weithting was last increased for staff working in the 'old' universties in the capital, except for those working for the Open University.

We also note with concern the outcome of discussions with employers on 12 February 2003, which resulted in a small improvement on the offer to increase the London Allowances for staff in post-92 institutions. Furthermore, the resolution by employers that issues concerning the London Allowance in pre-92 institutions would have to be dealt with by individual institutions presents major difficulties in pursing a fair level of allowance for staff employed in London.

We support our local associations in their discussions with employers to secure a fair level of London Allowance, which is comparable with the best in the sector. *And we call upon all London higher education institutions to support the proposed London Consortium to consider future arrangements for the payment of London allowances.

*Goldsmiths is not joining the London Consortium in the near future but  may do so sometime, which creates an ambiguous situation.
